The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a petition from Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra challenging her expulsion from the Lok Sabha on Friday. Moitra filed the petition after the Lok Sabha adopted an ethics committee report that found her guilty of accepting bribes for posing questions in parliament. The bench, consisting of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and S.V. Bhatti, will address the matter during the hearing.
Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, representing Moitra, presented the case to a Chief Justice of India-led bench on Wednesday. Justice Chandrachud expressed an intention to decide on the request for urgent listing of the plea.
Moitra faced expulsion from the Lok Sabha on December 8 following the house’s adoption of the ethics panel report through a voice vote. She strongly criticized her expulsion, likening it to a verdict by a “kangaroo court” and accusing the government of weaponizing a parliamentary panel to coerce the opposition.
The controversy involving Moitra began when BJP MP Nishikant Dubey accused her of accepting bribes from businessman Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for specific questions in parliament. Dubey alleged that Moitra compromised national interest by sharing her Lok Sabha account login details with Hiranandani. The Speaker referred the matter to the ethics committee, which recommended Moitra’s disqualification as a parliament member after recording statements from Moitra, Dubey, and advocate Jai Anant Dehadrai, who allegedly provided evidence against the former MP.
