A court on Saturday rejected the bail plea of Chetansinh Chaudhary, a dismissed Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable accused of shooting his senior colleague and three passengers on a moving train in July. Chaudhary, currently in custody in Maharashtra’s Akola, presented a bail plea citing “haunted illusions of the ghostly world” and erratic behavior. The police opposed the plea, indicating that Chaudhary harbored “anger and grudge” towards a particular community, showing no remorse for the crime. Granting bail could tarnish the law’s image and create fear among religious groups, the Government Railway Police (RPF) argued.
Umesa Khatoon, the wife of victim Asgar Shaikh, opposed Chaudhary’s bail, describing him as a “terrorist-minded person” and a threat to national security. The incident occurred on July 31 on the Jaipur-Mumbai Central Express near Palghar railway station, where Chaudhary shot dead RPF Assistant Sub-Inspector Tika Ram Meena and two passengers with an automatic weapon. He was apprehended by passengers after pulling the train’s chain near Mira Road station on the Mumbai suburban network. In October, the police filed a chargesheet against Chaudhary, who faces charges under IPC sections 302 (murder), 153-A (promoting enmity between groups), and relevant provisions of the Railways Act and Maharashtra Prevention Of Defacement of Property Act.
