Iran declares visa-free entry for Indians, relaxes entry rules for 32 other countries

In a bid to improve diplomatic relations and boost tourism, Iran has lifted visa requirements for citizens of 33 countries, including Saudi Arabia, India, Lebanon, and Tunisia. This move is expected to enhance Iran’s engagement with different nations and showcase its commitment to an open-door policy. The decision increases the number of countries or territories whose citizens can visit Iran without obtaining a visa to 45.

The easing of visa restrictions is seen as a positive step to improve relations with Saudi Arabia, with which Iran has had years of tension. Both nations have been involved in conflicts in Syria, Iraq, and Yemen. The recent attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure were attributed to Iran and its Arab proxy forces, although Iran denied involvement. Iran and Saudi Arabia agreed to restore full diplomatic relations, which were severed in 2016, under a Chinese-mediated agreement in March.

The list of countries benefiting from the relaxed visa rules includes Lebanon, Tunisia, India, several Central Asian, African, and Muslim nations. However, Russians will only enjoy visa exemption when visiting Iran in groups. Additionally, Iranian pilgrims are set to begin regular travel to Saudi Arabia from December 19, marking the first time in eight years.
