Parliament adjourns until 2 p.m. amid opposition uproar on security breach

Opposition parties, primarily led by the Congress, once again brought attention to the breach of Parliament security in the Rajya Sabha on Monday, leading Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar to adjourn the House until 2 p.m. Initially, the session was adjourned till 11:30 a.m., but due to the uproar by the opposition regarding the breach of Parliament security, proceedings were further adjourned till 2 p.m. Opposition MPs raised concerns that although Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah had made statements on the issue outside the Rajya Sabha, their request for a discussion on the matter within the House was being denied.

Chairman Dhankhar dismissed 22 notices submitted by opposition MPs under Rule 267, which called for the suspension of the day’s business to address the breach of security at Parliament, stating that “they do not merit admittance.” The chairman did not specify the content of the notices. In response, opposition MPs insisted that the Chair should at least acknowledge the issue. When the Chair declined their demand, slogans were raised by the opposition members.

Congress members K C Venugopal, Jairam Ramesh, and Rajeev Shukla highlighted that while the prime minister and home minister had addressed the issue externally, opposition parties were not being permitted to raise the matter within the House. Some members stood in the aisles, displaying placards. As the slogan-shouting persisted, Chairman Dhankhar noted instances of serious misconduct among members and adjourned the House until 2 p.m.
