Following a surge in Covid-19 cases, the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine has directed all deputy directors of health services to recommend the use of face masks for immunocompromised patients and pregnant women in public spaces. Additionally, the directive includes testing all individuals displaying symptoms of the virus. The recent increase in cases, with 20 new positive results recorded on Sunday, prompted this proactive approach. Notably, five cases each were identified in Chennai and Chengalpattu, marking a shift from the state’s trend of reporting less than 10 cases over the past several months. The Directorate emphasizes the importance of public awareness, encouraging frequent handwashing, the use of face masks, and avoidance of crowded places.
On Sunday, a total of 391 individuals were tested, resulting in a Test Positivity Rate (TPR) of 6.2%. The Union Health Ministry, on December 13, conducted a virtual meeting with state heads, urging them to enhance Covid-19 surveillance and ensure preparedness for testing to effectively manage any potential surge in cases. In light of increased Covid-19 cases in Thailand, Indonesia, and the neighboring state of Kerala, operational guidelines for the disease have been revised. These measures aim to strengthen the state’s response to the evolving situation and safeguard public health.
