A black and blue evening dress worn by Princess Diana has fetched $1.1 million at auction, setting a new world record for the highest price paid for one of her gowns. The gown, designed by Jacques Azagury, was worn by Diana in Florence in 1985 and later photographed during a visit to Vancouver in 1986. The dress, featuring a long black velvet bodice embroidered with blue stars and a two-tier blue organza skirt with a sash and bow, was part of the “Hollywood Legends” sale organized by Julien’s Auctions and Turner Classic Movies.
The auction house estimated the dress’s value to be between $100,000 and $200,000, but it ultimately sold for $1,148,080. The sale also included a matching illustration of the dress. Julien’s Auctions stated that this marks a new world record for the most expensive dress worn by Princess Diana sold at auction, surpassing the previous record of $604,800.
The dress’s popularity and high bidding can be attributed to its historical significance and connection to the iconic Princess. Princess Diana’s fashion choices were closely watched and admired, making items associated with her highly sought after by collectors.
In addition to the evening dress, a pink chiffon blouse worn by Diana for her 1981 engagement portrait to Prince Charles by Lord Snowdon was also part of the auction. The blouse, created by designers David and Elizabeth Emanuel, who later designed Diana’s wedding dress, was sold for $381,000, exceeding its estimated value of $80,000 to $100,000.
These items, with their links to Princess Diana’s life and iconic moments, continue to captivate the public and collectors alike, underscoring the enduring fascination with the late Princess’s style and influence.
