The INDIA bloc, an opposition alliance, is set to convene a meeting on Tuesday to strategize a joint campaign, address seat-sharing concerns, and redefine their approach for countering the BJP in the upcoming 2024 general elections. In the aftermath of setbacks in recent assembly polls, the alliance faces the challenge of formulating a “core positive agenda.” The meeting, scheduled at the Ashoka Hotel in Delhi, will emphasize the theme “Main Nahin, Hum (We, Not Me)” according to a senior Congress leader. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee affirmed that the INDIA bloc’s prime ministerial candidate would be decided post the 2024 elections, expressing confidence in defeating the BJP.
Opposition leaders, including Tejashwi Yadav, emphasized that committees within the INDIA bloc have been working behind the scenes, making preparations for the polls. Challenges include formulating an alternative common program and building consensus on appointing a convener, spokesperson, and common secretariat. Seat-sharing negotiations with the Congress in some states are underway, while West Bengal, Kerala, Punjab, and Delhi remain contentious. The recent BJP victories in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh have intensified the pressure on opposition parties to present a unified front. With limited time before the 2024 elections, the opposition bloc faces the task of refining its election narrative to counter the BJP under Prime Minister Modi.
