TN Rains: Rescue Operations for Stranded Train Passengers in Srivaikuntam Underway

Efforts are underway to rescue approximately 800 stranded passengers in Srivaikuntam, southern Tamil Nadu, with officials stating that the operation is in progress and will be completed at the earliest. Meanwhile, the Army is aiding in the evacuation of individuals from flood-affected regions, providing necessary medical care.

Despite a decline in rainfall in most parts of southern Tamil Nadu, severe inundation persists, impacting normal life. Collaboration among the NDRF, Air Force, railway, and local authorities is facilitating the rescue work at Srivaikuntam railway station in Thoothukudi district, where stranded passengers spent the night in train coaches.

Troops assisted in the rescue of over 100 individuals, including 54 women, a pregnant woman, and 19 children near Thoothukudi, offering medical care and life support. Chief Minister M K Stalin, from Delhi, conducted a virtual meeting on Monday night with ministers and district collectors, urging them to intensify rescue efforts as many people were still stranded in various areas of Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli districts. Additional water-draining pumps have been dispatched from Chennai to southern districts, and approximately 200 boats have been deployed to aid in the ongoing rescue operations.
