Four suspects involved in the uploading of a deepfake video featuring actor Rashmika Mandanna have been identified by Delhi Police, with efforts underway to apprehend the main conspirator. While these four individuals are linked to the upload, not the creation of the deepfake, authorities are actively pursuing the mastermind behind the incident. Three of the suspects were traced through information provided by Meta, the company overseeing platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The investigation faced challenges as the accused had reportedly deleted information from their accounts, complicating the tracking process. Cyber experts from Delhi Police are now focused on identifying the key conspirator, who likely used a fake identity and a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to upload the deepfake videos, adding an extra layer of difficulty in tracing the perpetrator. A month ago, Delhi Police registered an FIR at the Special Cell in connection with the AI-generated deepfake video of Rashmika Mandanna. The Delhi Commission for Women had also sought action over the widespread circulation of the deepfake video on social media platforms. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw issued notices to social media platforms on November 18, directing them to identify and remove deepfake content. Meta responded by expressing its inability to provide details of the deleted account. Police are awaiting a response from GoDaddy, as a similar profile was created through that platform. The incident highlighted the dangers of deepfakes, prompting increased vigilance from authorities and social media platforms.
