Funding Shortage: Thousands of Widows Face Months Without Pension

The Delhi government has revealed that the pensions for over 36,000 recipients in the national capital were delayed for several months due to insufficient budget allocation in the Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme. According to officials, these widows are entitled to a monthly sum of Rs 2,500 under the government’s pension program. The women and child development department recently received approval from the finance department, leading to the disbursement of pensions to all beneficiaries.

In response to the issue, the government informed the Vidhan Sabha, “Due to a lack of sufficient budget in the ‘Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme,’ the pension of 36,361 beneficiaries was not released for a few months. The department has released the pension of all the beneficiaries after obtaining approval from the finance department and will continue to release it every month.” The delay in pension disbursement had also affected the annual programs of the Assembly during Diwali and Chhath, as funds were not released by the concerned authorities. Finance minister Atishi emphasized that the government has a surplus budget and is not facing a shortage of funds, addressing obstacles created by the finance department in the functioning of various departments.
