INDIA Bloc Plans Protest on December 22 Over Suspended MPs

The opposition INDIA bloc, led by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, has announced a nationwide protest scheduled for December 22 to protest the suspension of 141 MPs from Parliament. The coalition, which held a meeting, passed a resolution condemning the suspension, terming it “undemocratic.” The move comes after an additional 49 opposition lawmakers were suspended from Lok Sabha on Tuesday for unruly behavior, bringing the total number of suspended MPs in both Houses of Parliament to 141. Addressing a press conference after the meeting, Kharge emphasized the need to stand together to save democracy, calling it a historic event in India’s parliamentary history.

Kharge criticized the government’s reluctance to address the concerns raised by the opposition regarding the security breach in Parliament on December 13. He questioned the absence of Home Minister Amit Shah or Prime Minister Narendra Modi to apprise the House of the incident and accused them of undermining democracy. The protest aims to challenge what the opposition perceives as undemocratic actions, emphasizing unity to counter the government’s mindset. While the government defended the suspensions, citing insult to parliamentary leaders, the opposition labeled the move as an attack on democracy.
