West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, after a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, confirmed that she proposed the name of Mallikarjun Kharge as the prime ministerial candidate during the alliance meeting on Tuesday. Banerjee stated that she suggested Kharge’s name, and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal supported the proposal. In the fourth alliance meeting, sources indicated that Banerjee and Kejriwal put forth Kharge’s name as the potential prime ministerial candidate. However, Congress President Kharge emphasized the need to prioritize winning and strengthening the opposition before discussing the prime ministerial candidate.
According to MDMK’s Vaiko and other leaders, Banerjee and Kejriwal proposed Kharge’s name, envisioning him as the country’s first Dalit prime minister. Kharge, in response, emphasized the importance of first securing a majority before deciding on the prime ministerial candidate. He stated that winning collectively should be the priority, and he refrained from identifying himself as a candidate at this stage. Kharge highlighted his commitment to fighting for equality and serving the poor, emphasizing his continuous victories over the past 50 years. He asserted that his focus is on defeating Narendra Modi and working collaboratively to counter the BJP.
