Goan Fish Curry Recipe
Ingredients:
– 500g fish (use any firm fish like kingfish, pomfret, or mackerel)
– 1 cup grated coconut
– 1 onion, finely chopped
– 2 tomatoes, chopped
– 1/2 cup tamarind pulp
– 4-5 dry red chilies
– 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
– 1/2 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
– 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
– 1 tablespoon coriander powder
– 4-5 garlic cloves, minced
– 1-inch ginger, grated
– 2 sprigs of curry leaves
– 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
– Salt to taste
Instructions:
1. Clean and cut the fish into medium-sized pieces. Marinate the fish with salt and turmeric powder. Set aside.
2. In a pan, dry roast mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, and dry red chilies until aromatic. Allow it to cool and then grind into a fine paste with grated coconut using some water.
3. Heat oil in a pot or pan. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
4. Add minced garlic and grated ginger. Sauté for a minute until the raw smell disappears.
5. Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft and oil starts to separate.
6. Now, add the ground coconut paste, turmeric powder, and coriander powder. Cook on medium heat for 5-7 minutes.
7. Pour tamarind pulp into the mixture and add salt. Stir well and bring it to a gentle boil.
8. Once the curry base is ready, add the marinated fish pieces and curry leaves. Simmer on low heat until the fish is cooked through, and the flavors are well infused.
9. Adjust the consistency of the curry by adding water if needed.
10. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice or crusty bread.
