Southern Railway rescues stranded passengers in flood-hit southern TN after 30 hours

All 500 stranded passengers at Srivaikuntam railway station were evacuated by NDRF, wading through knee-deep water to reach Velur, where buses transported them to Vanchi Maniyachchi station. A special train with 18 coaches departed at 10 pm, heading to Chennai. Approximately 800 Tiruchendur Express passengers bound for Chennai had been stranded at Srivaikuntam station since Sunday night. While 300 were relocated to a relief center around 1:30 am on Monday, the remaining 500 were stuck on the train.

On Tuesday at 10:15 am, an NDRF team and three RPF personnel reached Srivaikuntam. Food packets were dropped by choppers and distributed by the RPF team. Later, 15 more RPF team members arrived. Despite challenges, a pregnant woman stranded in Srivaikuntam was safely evacuated by helicopter. One passenger, Senthurkani (65), stated, “The rescue center was a school with no basic facilities like electricity or toilets. Till Monday morning, we did not get any food. Srivaikuntam people prepared upma for us and arranged milk and other facilities for our children.”
