Stalin seeks Rs 2,000 Cr interim relief from PM for TN Rain, 10 deaths reported

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin sought interim relief of Rs 2,000 crore from the National Disaster Relief Fund (NDRF) during his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Chief Minister presented a memorandum, acknowledging that a comprehensive assessment of the permanent damage would take time and requesting immediate assistance to support livelihoods and repair public infrastructure in the four southern districts affected by the unprecedented floods.

Stalin emphasized that the Rs 2,000 crore interim relief would aid in providing livelihood support to the flood-affected population and facilitate the repair and restoration of public infrastructure in Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari, and Tenkasi districts. He highlighted the severe impact on around 40 lakh people in Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi, stating that Srivaikuntam and Thoothukudi towns faced a serious situation due to the flooding of the Thamirabarani river.

Meanwhile, the death toll in the rains reached 10, with heavy rainfall persisting in the southern districts. Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena pointed out that the state was inadequately forewarned about the rainfall impact, stating that the India Meteorological Department’s forecast of isolated to heavy rainfall did not accurately predict the extent of the extreme rainfall in the affected districts. An inter-ministerial central team is expected to visit Tamil Nadu to assess the flood damage, and Chief Minister Stalin’s planned inspection of flood-hit regions has been postponed to Thursday due to the central team’s visit on Wednesday. The central and state government agencies, along with the armed forces, are actively engaged in relief and rehabilitation efforts.
