Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya will conduct a virtual review meeting with health ministers, additional chief principal secretaries (health), and officials from all states, union territories, and central ministries on Wednesday to evaluate the preparedness of health facilities and services in the wake of the recent spike in COVID-19 cases. As COVID-19 cases surge in some southern states, particularly Kerala, the minister will assess the response preparedness, availability of medical oxygen, hospital beds, ventilators, drugs, diagnostics, and referral transport. The meeting comes after India reported an increase in respiratory illness cases and the detection of the new JN.1 variant of the coronavirus in the country.
In an advisory issued on Monday, the Union Health Ministry emphasized the importance of maintaining constant vigilance over the COVID-19 situation, particularly at the district level. The advisory highlighted the need to monitor the virus’s circulation and its behavior in Indian weather conditions, urging states and union territories to remain vigilant and continue surveillance measures for Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) alongside COVID-19. The health ministry underscored the significance of timely interventions and adherence to preventive measures to mitigate the impact of the virus’s potential spread.
