In response to the recent security breach at the Parliament building, the government has opted to assign the “comprehensive” security of the complex to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), according to official sources. The CISF, a central armed police force, is presently responsible for safeguarding various central government ministry buildings in Delhi, as well as installations in the nuclear and aerospace sectors, civil airports, and the Delhi Metro. The Union home ministry has directed a survey of the Parliament building complex to facilitate the “regular deployment of the CISF security and fire wing on a comprehensive pattern,” as per the sources.
The survey, to be conducted by experts from the government building security unit of the CISF, will include fire combat and response officers, along with officials from the existing Parliament security team. Both the old and new Parliament complexes, along with their affiliated buildings, will come under the comprehensive security cover of the CISF. This deployment will also incorporate existing elements of the Parliament Security Service (PSS), the Delhi Police, and the Parliament Duty Group (PDG) of the CRPF. The decision follows a significant security breach on the anniversary of the 2001 Parliament terror attack, where individuals entered the Lok Sabha chamber, released yellow smoke, and shouted slogans before being subdued by MPs. Simultaneously, others sprayed colored smoke outside the Parliament premises during the same incident.
