Kerala Govt Approves Land Acquisition for Sabarimala Greenfield Airport in Kottayam

The Kerala state government has given the green light for the acquisition of 2,570 acres of land in Kottayam, marking a significant development for the Sabarimala Greenfield Airport project. The proposed airport is set to be located in Erumeli South and Manimala villages. Revenue Minister K Rajan announced the decision to move forward with the land acquisition process, emphasizing that the choice of the specified land took into account factors such as public demand, the minimum land requirement, and the absence of other suitable land options. The Union Ministry of Forests, Environment, and Climate Change has confirmed the suitability of the identified land for the airport, according to Rajan.

To adhere to the Land Acquisition and Rehabilitation Act, 2013, a preliminary notification under section 11(1) is expected to be issued within one year of the expert committee’s recommendations on the social impact assessment report, submitted on August 22, 2023. The preliminary notification for land acquisition is anticipated to be issued in August 2024, as per the expert committee’s timeline. The latest approval brings the Sabarimala Greenfield Airport project one step closer to realization, providing a boost to the region’s transportation infrastructure.
