A central team visited rain-affected areas in Thoothukudi to assess the unprecedented rainfall’s impact and engage with residents and officials. Thoothukudi district continues to grapple with the aftermath, facing challenges such as road closures, knee-high water levels, and disruptions in essential services. Although relief materials are reaching the region, issues persist regarding drinking water scarcity and contamination concerns. Sporadic protests erupted due to perceived inadequacies in relief measures, while power supply remains disrupted in several areas. Flight operations at Thoothukudi airport resumed on Wednesday.
Despite challenges, state and central agencies are actively involved in relief and rescue efforts. Chief Minister M K Stalin reviewed the ongoing work and urged officials to expedite operations. The Chief Minister is expected to visit Thoothukudi on Thursday. Multiple Army teams have conducted rescue operations in various parts of the district, aided by the Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard, NDRF, TNDRF, Fire and Rescue Services, and police personnel. Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena reported the engagement of 10 helicopters and 323 boats in rescue operations, with 27 tonnes of food provided to affected residents.
