Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau remarked on Wednesday that India’s relations with Canada may have experienced “a tonal shift” in the aftermath of the indictment of an Indian national in the US for conspiring to assassinate a Sikh separatist on American soil.
Trudeau, speaking to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, suggested that there is a growing understanding that blustering tactics won’t resolve the situation, and there appears to be a willingness to collaborate in a more constructive manner. He noted that the recent US indictment may have influenced the Indian government to adopt a more measured tone, indicating that merely launching attacks against Canada won’t resolve the issue.
Trudeau emphasized that Canada aims to avoid a confrontation with India, expressing the desire to focus on a trade deal and advance the Indo-Pacific strategy. However, he underscored Canada’s commitment to standing up for people’s rights, safety, and the rule of law. The strained ties between India and Canada were exacerbated when Trudeau made allegations in September about a potential involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a claim rejected by India as “absurd” and “motivated.” The recent US indictment implicating an Indian national in a plot to assassinate a Sikh separatist has further contributed to the evolving dynamics between the two nations.
