The Dutch government has announced its decision to deliver 18 F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine to support its efforts against Russia’s invasion. Caretaker Prime Minister Mark Rutte informed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy of the decision, emphasizing that the delivery of F-16s is a crucial aspect of the military support agreements with Ukraine.
The delivery of the fighter jets is contingent upon obtaining an export permit from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and meeting specified criteria for personnel and infrastructure in Ukraine. Rutte did not provide a timeline for these decisions but clarified that the announcement enables the reservation of funds and resources to prepare the planes for delivery.
In expressing gratitude for the decision, President Zelenskiy acknowledged the Dutch government’s commitment to delivering the initial 18 F-16 jets to Ukraine. The move aligns with broader international support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s aggression.
The Netherlands had previously dispatched its first batch of US-made F-16s to a new training facility for Ukrainian pilots and staff in Romania the previous month. Joining the Netherlands in supporting Ukraine, Denmark, Norway, and Belgium have also committed to providing F-16 jets. The US government approved these contributions, with the transfer set to occur once pilot training is completed.
The decision to deliver F-16 fighter jets underscores the collaborative efforts of several nations to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities in response to the ongoing conflict with Russia. This move not only demonstrates solidarity among European countries but also reinforces the international community’s commitment to supporting Ukraine in its efforts to defend its sovereignty.
