Multiple US lawmakers have expressed condemnation over the vandalism of the Shri Swaminarayan Mandir Hindu Temple in Newark, California, which occurred last week. The temple was vandalized with anti-India graffiti, and local police are investigating the incident as a potential hate crime.
Representative Barbara Lee denounced the attack on the temple via social media, stating, “I unequivocally condemn this attack on Swaminarayan Mandir Hindu Temple in California. Hatred in all forms cannot be tolerated. Those responsible must be held accountable.” Similarly, Representative Eric Swalwell condemned the act on his social media account, emphasizing that there is no room for hate.
Several other leaders, including Raja Krishnamoorthi, Ro Khanna, and Shri Thanedar, also expressed their condemnation of the “disgraceful act.” Shri Thanedar called for a thorough investigation into the crime.
The US State Department joined in the condemnation, posting on social media, “We condemn the vandalism of Shri Swaminarayan Mandir Hindu Temple in California. We welcome efforts by the Newark Police Department to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.”
The Consulate General of India in San Francisco strongly condemned the defacement of the temple, expressing that the incident hurt the sentiments of the Indian community. The consulate has urged a quick investigation and prompt action against the vandals by US authorities.
Images on social media showed the word “Khalistan” sprayed on a signpost in the temple, along with other objectionable graffiti. The Consulate’s statement indicates that the incident has caused distress among the Indian community, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation and accountability for the perpetrators.
