Plateau: At least 16 people were killed in an attack by gunmen. The attack occurred in Mushu village in the north-central state of Plateau of Nigeria.
Plateau is one of the ethnically and religiously diverse hinterland states in Nigeria’s Middle Belt. The region is on the dividing line between Nigeria’s mostly Muslim north and mainly Christian south. Clashes between herders and farmers are very common in this. These clashes have claimed several lives in recent years.

The ethno-religious conflict mainly occurs between Muslim herders and Christian farmers. However, expanding agriculture is also a major factor in these bloody conflicts.
In May of this year, clashes between farmers and herders claimed more than 100 lives in Plateau.
Northwest and central Nigeria have been plagued by criminal gangs for years. The heavily armed groups have carried out thousands of abductions and killings in the north-west and central states of Nigeria. Attacks against civilians, killings and mass kidnappings for ransom, particularly of school children, have become common in northwest Nigeria.
