Kashmir Nights See Further Drop in Temperature, Pahalgam Chilled as Valley’s Coldest

For the second consecutive night, Kashmir experienced a further drop in minimum temperatures, causing disruptions in daily life due to dense fog on Monday morning, as reported by officials. Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 2.3 degrees Celsius, slightly lower than the previous night’s minus 2.1 degrees. Pahalgam, serving as a base camp for the Amarnath Yatra, recorded the lowest temperature in the Kashmir Valley at minus 4.3 degrees Celsius.

Gulmarg, a renowned ski resort in Baramulla district, registered a low of minus 2.6 degrees Celsius, while Qazigund, Kokernag, and Kupwara reported temperatures of minus 2.6, minus 1.6, and minus 3.0 degrees Celsius, respectively. The Meteorological Department forecasted mainly dry weather in the region until the end of the month.

Dense fog blanketed Srinagar, impacting traffic and causing delays in flights, particularly from Delhi. The visibility in Srinagar was as low as 91 meters at 8:30 am, prompting caution for motorists. Flights to Srinagar faced delays due to dense fog in Delhi.

Kashmir is currently in the grip of ‘Chilla-i-Kalan,’ the 40-day harshest winter period marked by cold waves, freezing water bodies, and the likelihood of snowfall. This phase extends until January 31, followed by a 20-day ‘Chilla-i-Khurd’ (small cold) and a 10-day ‘Chilla-i-Bachha’ (baby cold), maintaining cold conditions in the region.
