A meeting led by Devaswom Minister K Radhakrishnan and Revenue Minister K Rajan failed to resolve the ongoing deadlock regarding the organization of the renowned Thrissur Pooram in 2024. The disagreement primarily revolves around the rental cost for the land designated for an exhibition during the festival. The Cochin Devaswom Board (CDB) increased the rent from Rs 39 lakh in the previous edition to Rs 2.20 crore, sparking the dispute. The meeting, which took place on Sunday, involved officials from the CDB and representatives of Paramekkavu and Thiruvambady temples, the main organizers of the festival. However, the ministers did not commit to reducing the rent and explained that a decision would be contingent upon the court’s verdict, as the issue is currently under judicial consideration. Minister Radhakrishnan assured that the government had no intention of hindering the smooth conduct of the festival.
Simultaneously, authorities from Thiruvambady temple issued a warning, stating that if the rent remained at Rs 2.20 crore, they might be compelled to take drastic measures, such as limiting the Thrissur Pooram to a ritual. Previously, accusations were leveled against CDB President M K Sudarshan, alleging attempts to sabotage the festival. In response, opposition parties initiated protests, leading the government to convene the meeting on Sunday to address the ongoing concerns and disputes surrounding the Thrissur Pooram.
