A senior general from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards was reportedly killed in Syria following an Israeli airstrike, as confirmed by the military force and Iranian state media. The general, Razi Moussavi, was said to be one of the most experienced advisors of the Quds Force, the foreign arm of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). According to Tehran’s official IRNA news agency, Moussavi was targeted in the Zeinabiyah district near Damascus. The IRGC stated that he was killed in a “missile attack” and had been a companion of General Qassem Soleimani, who was assassinated by a US drone strike in Baghdad in 2020. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported Israeli strikes on positions used by Iranian groups and Hezbollah in the Sayyida Zeinab area. Israel has frequently launched airstrikes in Syria, particularly targeting Iran-backed forces and Hezbollah fighters. While Israel rarely comments on such strikes, it has escalated attacks in Syria, especially against Hezbollah, following its conflict with Hamas triggered by the Palestinian group’s October 7 attacks. Iran supports Hamas financially and militarily but denies direct involvement in the attacks. Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, a response to the conflict, has resulted in casualties, with differing figures reported by Israeli and Palestinian sources.
