India reported 529 new cases of COVID-19 in a single day, with an active infection count of 4,093, according to the health ministry’s update on Wednesday. Over the past few days, there has been a resurgence in daily cases, which had dropped to double digits until December 5. The recent increase is attributed to the emergence of a new variant and cold weather conditions. Three new fatalities were recorded in the last 24 hours, with two from Karnataka and one from Gujarat. While the daily case numbers had decreased significantly, they have risen again, indicating ongoing challenges in managing the pandemic.
At the peak of the pandemic in early 2020, daily cases were in the lakhs. Since then, India has witnessed more than 4.5 crore infections and over 5.3 lakh deaths in approximately four years. On a positive note, the number of people who have recovered from COVID-19 exceeds 4.4 crores, contributing to a national recovery rate of 98.81%, as per the ministry’s website. Despite the recent uptick in cases, the overall recovery rate remains high, emphasizing the effectiveness of vaccination and public health measures in controlling the spread of the virus.
