Ammonia Gas leak at fertilizer plant in North Chennai’s Ennore hospitalizes 42

After the gas leak incident in North Chennai’s Ennore, 42 individuals from the affected villages were admitted to both government and private hospitals in the city. Three of those affected are currently in the ICU, experiencing symptoms such as eye irritation, sore throat, and breathing difficulties. Health Minister Ma. Subramaniyan assured the public that all affected individuals are being treated continuously, and those in the ICU are not severely affected. Medical camps have been set up in the affected villages, and the government will cover the medical expenses of those affected.

The Coromandel International Limited released a statement asserting that the situation would return to normalcy soon. However, locals claim they received no prior notification from the company, and some workers alerted villagers about the abnormality. In response to the incident, the Coromandel group has requested the temporary suspension of operations at the Ennore Minor port, pending the rectification of abnormalities. The government has directed the temporary shutdown of the plant for a week, but locals are advocating for its permanent closure.
