Covid sub-variant JN.1 cases surge to 109 in India

The count of COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 cases in India has risen to 109 as an additional forty cases were reported, according to official sources on Wednesday. Among these cases, 36 were identified in Gujarat, 34 in Karnataka, 14 in Goa, nine in Maharashtra, six in Kerala, four each in Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu, and two in Telangana. The majority of patients are currently undergoing home isolation.

NITI Aayog member (Health) Dr. V K Paul emphasized last week that the new variant is under close investigation, urging states to enhance testing efforts and strengthen surveillance systems. Despite the increasing number of cases and the detection of the JN.1 sub-variant, officials have stated that there is no immediate cause for concern, as 92% of those infected have opted for home-based treatment, indicating mild illness. Hospitalization rates have not seen a significant rise, and COVID-19 is often an incidental finding in individuals hospitalized for other medical conditions.

Union Health Secretary Sudhansh Pant, in a communication to states and Union territories, stressed the importance of implementing necessary public health measures and highlighted critical COVID-19 control and management strategies, especially during the ongoing festive season. States have been urged to ensure effective compliance with operational guidelines for the revised surveillance strategy for COVID-19 and monitor and report district-wise cases of Influenza-like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) in health facilities for the early detection of rising case trends.
