Customs officials at the Kozhikode International Airport seized smuggled gold worth Rs 68 lakh in two separate incidents on Tuesday. In the first case, Muhammed Javad (28) from Kasaragod, who arrived from Dubai, attempted to smuggle gold weighing 0.18 kg, valued at Rs 11 lakh, concealed inside the capacitor case of a mixer grinder. Customs authorities, suspecting something unusual, reexamined his bag and discovered the concealed gold after an additional x-ray examination.
In the second case, Muhammed Anees Meempidi (43) from Malappuram, who arrived from Ras Al-Khaimah, was apprehended for attempting to smuggle gold worth Rs 57 lakhs. The gold, in the form of powder, was concealed in three packages in his rectum. Officials became suspicious of the passenger and, during the interrogation, he admitted to the smuggling attempt. The gold powder recovered from him weighed 0.983 kg.
These incidents highlight the continuous efforts of customs authorities to curb gold smuggling through various concealment methods at airports, and the arrests were made under relevant legal provisions.
