Starting January 1, local self-government institutions in Kerala will transition to a paperless system with the introduction of K-SMART, a citizen-centric service delivery platform developed by the Information Kerala Mission. K-SMART, short for Kerala Solutions for Managing Administrative Reformation and Transformation, is designed to enhance the efficiency of local bodies, allowing people to access services from municipalities, corporations, and grama panchayats without physically visiting offices. The platform consolidates the operations of local self-government institutions and their services into 35 modules, offering citizens digital access to various services.
In the initial phase, K-SMART will introduce services through eight modules, replacing multiple software with a unified web portal and mobile application. The platform covers a range of services, including the issuance of death, birth, and marriage certificates, as well as processing building permit applications. Even before its launch, the Information Kerala Mission is preparing to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Karnataka government to implement K-SMART in their state. Customization is necessary for the system’s implementation in Karnataka, and officials are working towards adapting it for use in the new state.
