Chennai: Popular Tamil actor and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) founder Captain Vijayakanth passed away today. He was aged 71. As per MIOT International Hospital in Chennai, Vijayakanth was on ventilatory support following his admission for pneumonia. Earlier in the day, he was tested positive for COVID-19 . His party shared this news on social media handle.

Earlier in November, Vijayakanth was hospitalized. In September 2020 during the first wave of the Covid, the actor-turned-politician tested positive for Covid-19 and underwent treatment in Miot International in Chennai.

He founded the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK). He served as a Member of Legislative Assembly twice, representing the constituencies of Virudhachalam and Rishivandiyam. His party contested the Tamil Nadu Assembly polls for the first time in 2006 winning 1 seat, and in 20111 elections, DMDK got 29 seats in alliance with the AIADMK. Vijayakanth was the leader of opposition in the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly during 2011-16.
