Police complaint filed against actor Ranbir Kapoor and his family for ‘hurting religious sentiments’

A police complaint has been lodged against actor Ranbir Kapoor and his family following the circulation of a video featuring them celebrating Christmas. The video, recorded during the Kapoor family’s Christmas lunch, shows Ranbir Kapoor igniting a pudding after pouring a spirit over it, with his wife, actress Alia Bhatt, sitting beside him. The complaint accuses the actor of “hurting religious sentiments” and has been filed by Sanjay Tiwari at Ghatkopar police station through his lawyers Ashish Rai and Pankaj Mishra.

Tiwari contends that in the video, Ranbir Kapoor “is seen pouring liquor on cake and setting it on fire while saying Jai Mata Di.” He asserts that, in Hinduism, the fire god is invoked before other deities, and the complaint alleges that Kapoor and his family deliberately used intoxicants while celebrating a festival of another religion and chanted Jai Mata Di.

The footage is from the annual Christmas brunch hosted by Kunal Kapoor, attended by Ranbir, Alia, their daughter Raha, and other members of the Kapoor family on December 25. Additionally, the couple celebrated Christmas the previous night with Alia’s mother Soni Razdan and sister Shaheen Bhatt.

Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt have not yet publicly responded to the police complaint. The video, which circulated on social media, has garnered attention and sparked discussions about cultural sensitivities and religious sentiments in the public domain. The legal process will determine whether the complaint has any merit and if any action will be taken against the actors and their family members.
