The Congress party in the state is experiencing internal confusion regarding its stance on participating in the inauguration of the Ayodhya Ram temple. While KPCC president K Sudhakaran and Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan downplayed the issue, three former KPCC chiefs have urged party leaders to abstain from the ceremony. Sudhakaran denied claims by senior leader K Muraleedharan that the state unit conveyed opposition to participation in the event. Former KPCC presidents Muraleedharan and V M Sudheeran have urged the AICC leadership to stay away from the ceremony, citing concerns about the BJP exploiting it to provoke communal sentiments.
Muraleedharan emphasized that the state unit’s position is against Congress participation in the ceremony, adding that the party would decide after discussions within the party and with partners of the INDIA bloc. Sudheeran expressed apprehensions about the BJP using the event for divisive purposes and called for Congress and other secular parties to reject the invitation. Despite the state leadership’s attempt to downplay the issue, there is growing concern that a delayed decision could have repercussions in the upcoming general election, with discussions on the Congress stance reaching Muslim households and garnering attention from Muslim organizations. Satheesan and Sudhakaran, in apparent agreement, have chosen to minimize the matter. Satheesan, in an article published on the Congress anniversary, avoided addressing the Ayodhya issue directly but emphasized Mahatma Gandhi’s concept of ‘Ram rajya’ as a form of justice, focusing on social justice rather than temple walls.
