The Congress party is gearing up for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and has initiated the process of formal seat-sharing discussions with its INDIA alliance partners. A five-member national alliance committee, including former chief ministers Ashok Gehlot and Bhupesh Baghel, former union minister Salman Khurshid, senior leader Mohan Prakash, and party veteran Mukul Wasnik as convenor, has begun discussions with state Congress units to finalize the party’s stance in negotiations with allies. The committee is engaging with state units in Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Bihar, Jharkhand, Punjab, and Delhi for potential alliances with INDIA constituents.
Sources reveal that the committee will submit its recommendations to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge in early January. Following this, formal discussions with INDIA alliance partners on seat-sharing are expected to commence. Talks have already commenced in states like Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Bihar, and there is a possibility that a senior group of leaders will be authorized by the Congress President to engage in discussions with the allies.
Addressing concerns from state units regarding alliances in states like Delhi, Punjab, or West Bengal, sources emphasize that decisions will be made from a national perspective since this alliance is for the Lok Sabha elections. While state units may have local considerations, these tend to take a back seat in a nationally-formed alliance.
