Stock market: Sensex, Nifty open lower

Mumbai:  Indian equity benchmark indices opened lower on Friday. Today is the last trading session of 2023.  NSE Nifty dropped by 0.32% to 21,709.05 points, and the BSE Sensex slid 0.31% to 72,182.49.

1,852 stocks advanced , 1,145 declined, with 169 reaching a 52-week high and 10 hitting a low. Top gainers were Tata consumer products Ltd (3.23%), Tata motors Ltd (2.14%), Eicher motors Ltd (1.22%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (0.70%), and Sun Pharmaceutical industries Ltd (0.42%).  Top losers were Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (-2.22%),Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd (-0.90%), State Bank of India (-1.03%), Apollo hospitals enterprise Ltd (-1.02%), and Power grid corporation of India Ltd (-0.96%).

BSE small-caps rose by 0.31%, and mid-caps climbed 0.22%, indicating overall gains.
