Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has unveiled a comprehensive relief package worth Rs 1,000 crore for the rain-affected districts in the state. This relief initiative encompasses housing facilities, loans for MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises), and support for Self-Help Groups. Following an assessment of the damage caused by rain in Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli districts on December 21, the Chief Minister conducted a meeting with senior officials to address the needs of various sections affected by the unprecedented floods. The relief measures include financial aid for housing repairs, relief for farmers, special loans for small traders and vendors, and financial support for MSMEs.
The Chief Minister has directed officials to allocate Rs 4 lakh for fully damaged houses and up to Rs 2 lakh for partially damaged houses. The Rural Development Department will implement this scheme in Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts, where 4,577 new houses will be constructed, and 9,975 residences will be repaired at a total cost of Rs 385 crore. Additionally, Rs 250 crore has been allocated as relief for farmers who suffered losses due to crop damage in 2.64 lakh hectares. The relief package also includes a Flood Relief Loan Scheme for MSMEs, providing financial support of Rs 100 crore at a concessional interest rate of 6 percent for a year. Women’s Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in specific districts will receive loans, and compensation is allocated for various losses, including damage to fishing vessels and machinery.
