Gujarat reports record drug seizures; 1.9 million addicts

Recent data reveals a surge in drug-related incidents in Gujarat, with authorities confiscating 93,691 kg of drugs, 2,229 liters of liquid drugs, and 93,763 drug pills and injections over the past five years. The National Survey on Extent and Pattern of Substance Use in India indicates a concerning number of addicts in the state, with 17,35,000 male and 185,000 female drug addicts reported. The Ministry of Home Affairs shared details of seizures in Gujarat from 2018 to 2022, including opium-based drugs, cannabis-based drugs, cocaine, psychotropic substances, and various other forms of drugs.

In 2022, Gujarat accounted for a significant portion of cocaine seizures in India, with 39.1 kg out of the total 71.89 kg. The rising number of drug addicts is evident from the 2018 survey, revealing addiction statistics for cannabis-based drugs, opium-based drugs, sedatives, and inhalants. Hiren Banker, a spokesperson for the Gujarat Congress, criticized the state government for its insufficient police force to combat drug crimes, emphasizing that Gujarat has only 117 police personnel per lakh population, falling below the national average of 152 and the required 174.

The Ministry of Home Affairs acknowledged the challenges posed by Gujarat’s extensive maritime borders, contributing to difficulties in controlling drug trafficking. Hiren Banker from the Gujarat Congress raised concerns about the state’s ability to take strict action against drug crimes, citing the lack of adequate police force as a hindrance to effective law enforcement.
