On Saturday, India reported 743 new COVID-19 cases, with an active case count of 3,997, according to the Union health ministry. Over the past 24 hours, seven new fatalities were recorded, including three from Kerala, two from Karnataka, and one each from Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu. The daily case numbers, which had been in double digits until December 5, started rising again due to cold weather conditions and the emergence of a new COVID-19 variant. Although the current daily numbers are significantly lower than the peak during the early stages of the pandemic in 2020, the total number of infections in the country has surpassed 4.5 crore, resulting in over 5.3 lakh deaths in the past four years.
The national recovery rate stands at 98.81%, with more than 4.4 crore individuals having successfully recuperated from the disease, as reported on the health ministry’s website. A total of 220.67 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered across the country, indicating significant progress in vaccination efforts to curb the spread of the virus.
