The Indian Navy has redesigned the epaulettes for its top three ranks – Admiral, Vice Admiral, and Rear Admiral – following an announcement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Navy Day. The new shoulder badges now feature the Rajmudra (royal seal) of Chhatrapati Shivaji, along with the Indian sword, telescope, and golden buttons. The previous design included a sword and baton. The change aims to reflect the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji and celebrate India’s rich maritime heritage.
The Indian Navy expressed pride in the new design, emphasizing its commitment to the pillars of “Virasat Par Garv” (pride in heritage) and “Ghulami ki Mansikta se Mukti” (freedom from a slave mentality). The shift aligns with Indian traditions and showcases the navy’s embrace of Bharatiyata (Indianness) in both symbolism and spirit. The announcement was made on X (formerly Twitter), with the navy stating that the new design is a true reflection of the country’s maritime legacy.
In addition to the epaulettes, the Indian Navy has been implementing other changes to symbolize its connection with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s legacy. This includes adopting a new ensign with the octagonal seal of the Maratha kingdom, inspired by Shivaji’s maritime achievements. These changes reflect a broader effort by the Indian Navy to align its symbols and traditions with the nation’s cultural and historical heritage.
