A tragedy unfolded in a luxurious mansion located in one of the poshest enclaves in Massachusetts, United States, as the lifeless bodies of an Indian-origin couple, Rakesh Kamal (57) and Teena Kamal (54), along with their 18-year-old daughter Ariana, were discovered on Thursday evening. The preliminary investigation by Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey suggested a “deadly incident of domestic violence” with no external involvement.
Rakesh Kamal, an alumnus of Boston University, Stanford University, and MIT Sloan School of Management, had an extensive career in education consulting. He and his wife, Teena Kamal, established an Ed-tech company called EduNova in 2016, marketing a ‘student success system’ designed to improve student grades. However, financial troubles led to the dissolution of EduNova in December 2021, and the couple faced a foreclosure on their 19,000-square-foot mansion, which was sold in 2021 for $3 million.
Teena Kamal, an alumna of Delhi University and Harvard University, filed for bankruptcy in September 2022, highlighting the financial distress the family experienced. The authorities received a call from a relative of the Kamal family on Thursday evening, prompting a visit to the mansion, where the lifeless bodies were discovered. The family members were the only occupants of the mansion, located in a wealthy and safe neighborhood.
The investigation into this “terrible tragedy” will determine whether it is a case of suicide or murder. The medical examiner’s ruling is awaited, but a gun was found near Rakesh Kamal’s body. The Kamal family’s financial struggles and the subsequent foreclosure on their mansion underscore the challenges they faced in the lead-up to this tragic event.
