Intense Fog Predicted in Northern India Over the Weekend: IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert, indicating the likelihood of ‘very dense’ fog persisting across various regions in the Northwest and adjoining Central India, potentially extending to East India over the next two days. Cold day conditions are expected to persist in parts of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and north Rajasthan throughout Saturday and Sunday.

According to the IMD’s daily bulletin, very dense fog conditions with visibility less than or equal to 50 meters are anticipated in many parts of Punjab, West Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and East Uttar Pradesh until January 4. Additionally, dense fog conditions with visibility ranging from 50 to 200 meters are expected in Uttarakhand until January 4, north Madhya Pradesh, north Rajasthan, and Jharkhand on Sunday and January 1. Similar conditions are anticipated in Gangetic West Bengal on Sunday, followed by Odisha, Bihar, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura during Sunday and January 2.

The IMD also predicts light isolated rainfall/snowfall over Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand on Saturday and Sunday due to a feeble Western Disturbance. Furthermore, a fall of 2-3 degrees Celsius in maximum temperatures is likely over many parts of Central and Northwest India in the next two days, with no significant change thereafter. Lastly, a fresh easterly wave and Low Pressure Area over the West Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining Southeast Arabian Sea are expected to bring light to moderate rainfall in south Tamil Nadu, south Kerala, and Lakshadweep until January 3, with isolated heavy rainfall over south Tamil Nadu on Saturday.
