King Charles III announces awards for showbusiness royalty Shirley Bassey and Ridley Scott

King Charles III recently announced the New Year’s Honours awards in the UK, recognizing individuals for their achievements and contributions. Among the honorees are iconic singer Shirley Bassey, acclaimed director Ridley Scott, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, and Game of Thrones actor Emilia Clarke.

Shirley Bassey, who has sold over 135 million records, is named a Companion of Honour, an elite order with only 65 members at any given time. Director and producer Ridley Scott, known for films like Gladiator and Alien, receives an upgrade to Knight Grand Cross. Renowned author Jilly Cooper is honored with a damehood.

Emilia Clarke is recognized for co-founding the brain injury recovery charity SameYou after surviving two brain haemorrhages. Other notable figures include Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis, who is knighted, and former England cricketer Stuart Broad, who receives a decoration upon his retirement from cricket.

In the realm of sports, footballers Millie Bright, Mary Earps, and Lauren Hemp are acknowledged for their contributions to England’s journey to the Women’s football World Cup final.

One particularly poignant recognition is given to Ian Russell, a campaigner against harmful online content. His efforts contributed to the establishment of online safety legislation after the tragic death of his 14-year-old daughter Molly. The Molly Rose Foundation, a suicide prevention charity, was set up in Molly’s memory.

The honorees cover a diverse range of fields, including entertainment, sports, literature, and activism. The awards ceremony at Westminster Abbey was attended by King Charles III and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who praised the recipients for their “highest commitment to selflessness and compassion,” describing them as the “pride of this country” and an “inspiration to us all.”
