Wonka is emerging as a clear winner this Christmas at the box office

This Christmas, Wonka is emerging as the clear winner at the box office, outshining Jason Momoa’s superhero film, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The Timothee Chalamet-starring film is enjoying significant success compared to Aquaman 2, which is struggling to match Wonka’s results. However, the overall Christmas season is not proving to be a joyous one for Hollywood, as studios and theater owners face challenges in drawing audiences away from the comfort of their homes.

As of the December 25 weekend, Wonka claimed the top spot, while Aquaman 2 slipped in performance. Domestically, the Jason Momoa-led sequel has earned only $52.5 million, trailing more than 55 percent behind the first film. Nevertheless, its overseas cumulative total exceeds $100 million.

Illumination and Universal’s Migration secured the second spot behind Wonka, earning $6.3 million on Wednesday for a domestic total of $30.6 million. Aquaman 2 followed in third place with $5.9 million.

In the fourth position is Oprah Winfrey’s The Color Purple, which earned $3.9 million. The film had an impressive start on Christmas Day, raking in $18 million, marking the second-best opening ever for a film launched on December 25, and the best since 2009 (not adjusted for inflation).

The romantic comedy Anyone But You rounds out the top five in box office performance. Despite the challenges faced by the industry during this festive season, individual films are making notable contributions to the box office landscape.
