British Sikh senior medical professional knighted by King Charles III in the 2024 New Year Honours list

Dr. Amritpal Singh Hungin, a senior British Sikh medical professional with over 30 years of general practice (GP) experience, has been knighted in the 2024 New Year Honours list by King Charles III. The knighthood recognizes Dr. Hungin’s significant contributions to medicine, particularly in the field of general practice. He holds the position of Emeritus Professor of General Practice at Newcastle University and has played key roles in medical education and professional leadership.

Professor Pali Hungin, as he is commonly known, served as the founding Dean of Medicine at Durham University and also held the position of President of the British Medical Association (BMA). His extensive experience and dedication to the medical field have earned him this prestigious recognition.

The New Year Honours list, released annually by the British government, acknowledges individuals who have demonstrated exceptional achievements and a commitment to selflessness and compassion. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak commended the honorees, describing them as the pride of the country and an inspiration to all.

The list includes other notable figures, such as Staffordshire GP Dr. Chandra Mohan Kanneganti and Dr. Mala Rao, Senior Clinical Fellow of Imperial College London, both appointed as Commanders of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for their services to General Practice and public health, respectively.

Additionally, Bidesh Sarkar, Chief Financial Officer at the Department for Business and Trade, received the CBE honor for public service. Several British Indian individuals were also honored with the Order of the British Empire (OBE), recognizing their contributions to the community, charity, occupational health, public service, and sports.

The New Year Honours list highlights the diverse achievements and contributions of individuals across various fields, showcasing their dedication to making a positive impact on society.
