Govt Prohibits Students from Cleaning School Toilets

The Karnataka government has issued a circular explicitly cautioning schools against assigning students the task of cleaning toilets on school premises. The circular, released on December 28, declares that FIRs will be lodged against school heads found in violation of this directive. The Department of School Education and Literacy (DSEL) emphasized that students should solely be involved in academic, sports, and extracurricular activities. The responsibility of ensuring students are not engaged in tasks like toilet cleaning rests with teachers and school development and monitoring committees.

Expressing strong disapproval, the circular highlighted recent instances of children being assigned the cleaning of school toilets and deemed such practices objectionable. The government has underscored the seriousness of the matter and stated that appropriate action will be taken against those disregarding the directive. The DSEL has issued guidelines to schools regarding the maintenance of clean and hygienic toilets and urinals, explicitly prohibiting students from engaging in cleaning activities for any reason.

Additionally, the circular emphasized that maintenance grants have already been disbursed to schools, and proper coordination with school development and monitoring committees (SDMCs) is essential for phased utilization. Failure to adhere to these guidelines will result in disciplinary action against all involved parties, with FIRs being filed as a consequence, as warned by the DSEL. The circular further specified that education officials are required to monitor schools regularly, making timely visits to inspect washrooms, and stressed that toilets should not be locked during school hours. Any mistakes or negligence in this regard will lead to action being taken against responsible officials, as outlined in the circular.
