India has registered 841 new cases of COVID-19, marking the highest daily count in 227 days, as per the health ministry’s update on Sunday. The total number of active COVID-19 cases stands at 4,309. Over the past 24 hours, three new fatalities due to COVID-19 were reported—one each from Kerala, Karnataka, and Bihar. This spike in daily cases comes after a period of lower numbers, with daily cases dropping to double digits until December 5. The resurgence is attributed to the emergence of a new variant and cold weather conditions. At the peak of the pandemic, daily cases were in the lakhs, and over the past four years, India has recorded more than 4.5 crore infections and over 5.3 lakh deaths.
The health ministry’s website reports a national recovery rate of 98.81%, with over 4.4 crore people having recuperated from the disease. The total number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has reached 220.67 crore, according to the ministry’s data. Despite the recent surge in cases, the recovery rate remains high, and the vaccination campaign continues to progress.
