State reports 172 new COVID-19 cases

On Saturday, the health department in Maharashtra reported 172 new cases of coronavirus with no additional fatalities. The recent uptick in infections reflects an increasing trend in the state. In the week spanning from December 24 to 30, there were 620 reported cases, a notable rise compared to the preceding week from December 17 to 24, which saw only 103 infections. The weeks of December 3 to 9 and December 10 to 16 had 19 cases each. Furthermore, Maharashtra has identified 10 cases of the JN.1 sub-variant of Omicron as of Saturday, originating from Thane, Pune, and Akola cities, as well as Pune and Sindhudurg districts.

The dominant COVID-19 variant in Maharashtra is Omicron XBB.1.16, accounting for a total of 1,972 cases, according to the health department. Despite the surge in cases, the report on Saturday indicated no new fatalities, underscoring the importance of monitoring the evolving situation and implementing necessary public health measures.
