Armed drone shot down over Erbil airport in northern Iraq

On Tuesday, an armed drone targeting Erbil airport in northern Iraq, where U.S. and international forces are stationed, was successfully intercepted and shot down, according to information from two security sources. The Kurdistan Counter Terrorism, the security agency of the Iraqi semi-autonomous Kurdistan region, released a statement revealing that the armed drone, deployed by what they referred to as “illegal militia,” was neutralized at 09:52 a.m. local time. The report did not specify if the thwarted attack resulted in any damage or casualties.

This incident closely followed a similar event on Sunday evening when air defense systems intercepted and downed a drone over Erbil airport. The group claiming responsibility for that attack named itself “Islamic Resistance in Iraq.”

Given the heightened tensions and security concerns, particularly since the onset of the Israel-Hamas war in October, U.S. and international forces stationed in Iraq and neighboring Syria have remained on high alert. The series of attacks on their bases in the region has intensified, prompting increased vigilance and defensive measures among the stationed forces.
