Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the K-SMART facility in Kochi, a government e-governance tool developed by the Information Kerala Mission (IKM) for the local self-government department (LSGD). K-SMART, short for Kerala Solution for Managing Administrative Reformation and Transformation, aims to enable the public to access various local body services online without physically visiting government offices. The platform, available through a mobile app and web portal, facilitates services such as obtaining birth, death, and marriage certificates, property tax, and building permits. Users can submit applications and complaints, receive digital status updates, and utilize an integrated messaging system with notifications via WhatsApp and email.
The initiative is seen as a significant step towards digitizing local body services and promoting digital literacy. CM Pinarayi Vijayan emphasized the benefits of K-SMART for expatriates, allowing them to access services remotely, complete formalities like marriage registration from abroad, and conduct video KYC using their login credentials. The project is expected to reduce corruption and serve as a model for the country. Vijayan highlighted Kerala’s commitment to internet accessibility, citing the declaration of internet as a citizen’s right, the KFON project for low-cost internet, and infrastructure development initiatives like M-Sevanam and K-Fi, providing free Wi-Fi in public places.
K-SMART offers services such as birth and death certificates, construction permits, mass petition submissions, and complaint registrations through its application. LSGD Minister M B Rajesh assured the public about data safety and security, emphasizing the platform’s foolproof system to protect user privacy. Local bodies retain exclusive permission to use the provided details for generating reports, with no transfer of information to third parties. The initiative aligns with Kerala’s ongoing efforts to leverage technological advancements for the benefit of its citizens.
